How Long Does a Bathroom Renovation Take?

It's the second question most people ask, right after "how much will it cost?" - and for good reason. If you've got a family sharing one bathroom, or you're fitting an en-suite into a busy household, knowing how long you'll be without a working bathroom matters.

The short answer: most bathroom renovations take between 5 and 10 working days. But there's a lot of variation depending on the type of job. Here's a more detailed breakdown.

Typical Timelines by Job Type

  • Basic bathroom refresh (new suite, same layout, minimal tiling): 3 - 5 daysIf you're keeping the same layout and just replacing the suite and some tiles, the job is relatively quick. The plumbing connections are in the same places, so most of the time is spent on installation and finishing.

  • Full bathroom installation (new suite, full tiling, new flooring): 5 - 8 daysA complete strip-out and refurbishment takes longer, particularly if the room is being fully tiled. Tiling alone can take 2-3 days depending on the area and tile format.

  • Wet room installation: 7 - 10 daysWet rooms require a full tanking process before any tiling begins. This waterproofing layer needs time to cure properly before work can continue - rushing this step is one of the most common causes of wet room failures.

  • En-suite (new build from existing space): 7 - 12 daysIf we're creating an en-suite from a bedroom or landing area, there's additional work involved: partition walls, new drainage runs, and first-fix plumbing before the fitting stage can begin.

  • Cloakroom / downstairs WC: 2 - 4 daysSmaller room, smaller job. Cloakrooms are one of the quicker projects - particularly if the drainage and water supply are already nearby.

What Can Affect the Timeline?

  • Drying and curing time. Tile adhesive, grout, and tanking membranes all need time to cure before the next stage can begin. You can't rush chemistry, and a fitter who skips this step is cutting corners.

  • Bespoke or ordered items. If your chosen suite, tiles, or fittings are on order or have a long lead time, this affects when work can start - not how long the job itself takes. We always recommend having everything on site before work begins to avoid delays mid-project.

  • Unforeseen issues. Occasionally we find something behind a wall or under a floor that needs addressing - old pipework, damp, or structural issues. We always flag these immediately and agree on a plan before proceeding.

  • Bathroom size and spec. Larger rooms take longer. A high-spec job with large-format tiles, underfloor heating, and bespoke joinery takes more time than a straightforward replacement.

How to Minimise Disruption

A few things make a big difference to how smoothly a bathroom project runs:

  • Have all materials on site before work starts

  • Clear access to the bathroom and water stopcock

  • Let us know about any quirks in the existing plumbing or structure upfront

  • Plan for the bathroom to be out of use for the full duration - even if it's usable for parts of the day

We always give a realistic timeframe before we start, and we keep you updated if anything changes along the way.
